Eurocopter continues flight tests of the X3 demonstrator as part of the H3 (Hybrid Helicopter) high-speed long-range hybrid helicopter program.

After the completion of the development program, the aircraft will perform vertical take-off and landing, and in flight it will develop a cruising speed of over 220 knots (410 km / h).

The X3 prototype is equipped with two turboshaft engines driving a five-bladed main rotor and two additional propellers mounted on the wing flaps on the sides. This design allows the X3 to reach high speeds and hover in the air.

It is planned that the device will be produced in various versions and perform a wide range of tasks, including conducting long-range search and rescue operations, patrolling borders, supporting the actions of the Coast Guard, etc. Due to its high cruising speed and the ability to land in the absence of a runway, the device can used for special operations, incl. delivery and evacuation of reconnaissance groups, search and rescue operations in combat conditions, medical evacuation.

The first test flight of the X3 demonstrator took place on September 6 at the test center at the Istres airbase.

The first phase of testing is currently underway and will last until the end of December. At this stage, the aircraft will be tested at low speeds with a gradual expansion of flight modes and an increase in speed to 180 knots. After completing a three-month upgrade in March 2011, testing will continue with the aim of increasing the vehicle's cruising speed to 220 knots.
