Su-33 (Su-27K) - multipurpose shipborne deck-based fighter, horizontal takeoff and landing, with folding wing and horizontal tail for hangar storage.
The aircraft was created to defend naval ships from enemy air attack and is equipped with a system for refueling and transferring fuel in flight. The construction of two experimental Su-27Ks was carried out in 1986-87.
Since 1989, at the Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aviation Production Association named after Yu. A. Gagarin, the production of a pilot batch of Su-27K began. The flight of the first production aircraft took place in February 1990. State tests of the Su-27K were carried out in 1991-1994.
In April 1993, the first batch of naval fighters was transferred from KnAAPO to the aviation of the Northern Fleet. On August 31, 1998, by decree of the President of the Russian Federation, the Su-27K was put into service under the designation Su-33.
