At first glance, there are quite a few new products at the current exhibition Technology in Mechanical Engineering-2012. I mean, the samples shown for the first time in public. For example, the upgraded T-90MS was shown at REA-2011 in Nizhny Tagil, KAMAZ-63968 Typhoon was shown in Kazakhstan at KADEX-2012. It would seem that there is reason for despondency …
But no! Among the exhibits exhibited in the open area of seemingly familiar samples, the gaze of an experienced person will immediately catch on to an unusual modification of the Tiger armored car. Striking is an unusual for the "Tiger" layout with two doors on board, an unusual machine gun mount and an abundance of various devices on the roof. And the set of equipment at the car is completely perplexing.
Of course, armored cars "Tiger" have long been known and do not need an introduction, but this particular "Tiger" came out special. To put it mildly - it is truly unique, there are no analogues in the world! And this machine is called SBRM.
SBRM stands for service-combat reconnaissance vehicle and was developed by NPO Strela by order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation for the intelligence units of the Internal Troops. Development began three years ago, R&D was under the code "Saponification". Do not laugh, the codes of domestic developments, that the Ministry of Internal Affairs, that the Ministry of Defense have always been dumbfounded - "this is to confuse spies." The Abaim-Abanat assault vehicle and the Razruha chemical reconnaissance vehicle - how do you like it?
The requirements were very strict. No joke - it was necessary to assemble and match 10 points of special equipment and three operators + driver, and all this should have been placed on a highly mobile armored chassis with protection of at least 3rd class GOST.
As we can see, the "Tiger" perfectly fit the chassis, however, in a special modification, apparently based on the GAZ-233034 SPM-1. The car came out 4-seater, respectively, with 4 side doors. The stern doors were only left for servicing the equipment. The protection, presumably, corresponds to the army modifications of the STS and the policeman SPM-1, and has the protection of the 3rd class of GOST in the side projection, and in the frontal - the 5th class. The choice of "Tiger" is certainly not accidental - this car has become a standard armored vehicle in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the new car is completely unified (and this simplifies logistics) with the standard SPM-1, SPM-2, Abaim-Abanat and R-145BMA standing on supply of internal troops.
But the very essence of the SBRM, of course, is in its unique composition of equipment, which Western armored vehicles will also envy. The list is impressive: a target detection unit in the form of a small-sized radar station combined with multichannel optoelectronic systems, all this is attached to a retractable mast, which is retracted into the armored hull in the stowed state. In addition to radar and optical: an acoustic detector that determines the location of the shooter by the sound of the shot (the so-called "anti-sniper" system). The Eleron-type UAV complex with 2 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and to them a communication system and a control console, increases the reconnaissance capabilities even more. Also to help the scouts - a set of small-sized sensors for signaling equipment, which can be scattered near the car. The radio interception station with the radio signal source bearing function will not let you get bored either. And this is not counting the obligatory radio stations and a satellite navigation complex such as GLONASS / GPS.
And also - a blocker of explosive devices (jammer of electromagnetic protection against landmines with a radio fuse) and a stabilized remotely controlled weapon module (DUMV), with a large-caliber machine gun "Kord" with an advanced (thermal imager, thermal imaging channel and laser rangefinder) sighting system. Such high-tech machine-gun installations are infrequent guests on Russian equipment, and the question remains about the authorship of this device. Most likely it was developed and manufactured at the same Scientific and Production Association "Strela".
And all this is controlled from 3 computer terminals on board the SBRM, transmitted through the onboard information and control system and displays the navigation situation in real time. And all this is fueled by an autonomous diesel power plant, and so that the scout team does not suffer, a heater with air conditioning is also provided in the car.
Tired of reading the list? This only emphasizes the uniqueness of the SBRM - a set of equipment has been assembled on such a small machine, which even Western developers will envy. And domestic too - for example, a rare BRDM-3 based on a 14-ton BTR-80A, with its scanty set of old equipment looks frankly outdated, while significantly exceeding in weight and dimensions (and therefore in visibility) - however, it needs to make a discount on the already venerable age. Well, the BRDM-2 in terms of reconnaissance capabilities compared to the SBRM is generally old.
And do not forget that the SBRM can remove the reconnaissance mast in the stowed position, and in this form the vehicle will not stand out among other Tigers, this is also a plus.

In conclusion, it remains only to add that this machine is equipped with a huge set of complex and expensive devices. So the price of the car itself should grow many times over. But if the complex is really that effective, then it is needed. The era of the BRDM-2 with a set of radio stations and the commander's binoculars is a thing of the past. In place of the "mess" are high-tech armored cars of the 21st century.
