This self-loading rifle was developed by the well-known American company "Kel-tec CNC Industries", it continues the successful development of the commercial weapons of the already released lightweight Kel-tec SUB2000 rifle. The rifle was first shown to the public in 2003. To date, the rifle is successfully produced by the company and goes on sale in different versions.
The main purpose of the Kel-tec SU-16 self-loading rifle is positioned as a weapon for tourists and travelers, as well as for those who can find a worthy use for this weapon, using a "hunting" ammunition of 5, 56 × 45-mm. The ammunition is a civilian version of the famous NATO military cartridge 5, 56 × 45 mm. The rifle is lightweight and compact, especially when folded. It is possible to use this rifle for security and safety services.
For police units, shortened versions from Kel-tec CNC Industries, SU-16D and SU-16C rifles are suitable. Shooting from such rifles is possible with an unfolded stock. All modifications of the SU-16 rifle are provided with good reliability and acceptable firing accuracy. 400 meters with a telescopic sight and 200 meters without it.
Kel-tec SU-16 device
All modifications of the SU-16 rifle use a gas-operated automatic system with a long piston stroke, which is located above the barrel. The barrel is locked with a rotary bolt with seven radial lugs, behind a sleeve in the barrel breech. The folding stock, the forend and the barrel box are made of plastic. The ammunition is fed into the rifle using box magazines and is compatible with M16 and Ar-15 rifles.
The proprietary feature of the SU-16 rifles is the USM body, together with a semi-pistol-type handle and butt, connected by hinges to the barrel box. This made it possible for rifles to quickly fold in half, if necessary. Firing from folded weapons is not possible. In the "combat" position, the trigger body and the butt are fixed with a transverse pin. Rifle versions "SU-16D" and "SU-16C" are equipped with a separate, forward-down folding butt, while it is possible to fire when the butt is folded. Rifle versions "SU-16B" and "SU-16A" are provided with a special cavity in the butt, where it is possible to store two spare box magazines. Self-loading rifles Kel-tec SU-16 with the letter designation "A", "B" and "C" have a forend that can be folded out and used as a bipod for shooting. Aiming device - adjustable front sight and non-adjustable diopter rear sight. The rear sight is mounted on the now standard "Picatinny rail". Additional equipment can be installed on it - sights or flashlights.
