As reported on February 26, 2018, a large international shipbuilding group of companies Damen Shipyards Group, it received a contract from the South African procurement agency Armscor, directly subordinate to the South African Ministry of Defense, for the construction of three ships for the South African Navy. We are talking about the construction of three small patrol ships of the Damen Stan Patrol 6211 project with a length of 62 meters. The construction will be carried out at the Damen Shipyards Cape Town (DSCT), located in Cape Town (the second most populous city in South Africa, the legislative capital of the state).
The Damen Shipyards Group is of Dutch origin. Its headquarters are located in Gorinchem. Having become a large international group of companies doing business in 120 countries around the world, it has not ceased to be a private family company. She currently operates over 40 shipyards and 16 repair and conversion yards around the world. Among the company's assets are dry docks measuring 420x80 meters. The total number of working personnel of the company is about 9 thousand people, of which only 3 thousand people work in Holland.

Currently, this company produces about 180 vessels for various purposes annually. The company develops and manufactures both civilian and military products. The policy of the Damen group of companies is based on the pursuit of standardization, the use of modular designs and the provision of stock of finished ships. This ensures tight delivery times, low total costs to the owner, and reliable product performance to keep sales high.
Among the company's products there is also a fairly extensive line of small patrol ships, which is currently represented by 9 models. From a very small patrol vessel of the STAN PATROL 1204 project with a length of 12.6 meters to the flagship of the Damen line of patrol ships - the STAN PATROL 6211 patrol ship, which has grown in length to 62.2 meters. Hull material - steel, superstructure material - aluminum. The main purpose of the ship is patrolling, ensuring the safety of the economic maritime zone, searching and rescuing people at sea.

The developer attributes excellent performance to the ship's features, which is achieved by a combination of excellent seaworthiness and a good location of the wheelhouse. Also, the improved seaworthiness is highlighted, the shape of the hull provides the ship with good seaworthiness characteristics even at high speeds. Also, the advantages of the project include the high level of efficiency of the patrol ship. The long and narrow hull of the STAN PATROL 6211 guarantees the vessel a very low level of drag, which provides excellent economy throughout the entire speed range.
As representatives of the shipbuilding group Damen Shipyards Group reported on February 26, the contract between the company and the South African defense department was concluded as part of a project launched back in 2014 called Biro, which initially provides for the acquisition of three offshore patrol vessels (OPV) and three small ships for the South African Navy. coastal (Inshore Patrol Vessel - IPV) patrol ships. In February 2017, following an international tender, the Damen Group was selected as the main builder of both types of ships. Initially, as part of the OPV program, the project of the 85-meter 1800-ton patrol ship Damen 1800 Sea Ax was selected, but later the program for the construction of three large patrol ships was abandoned, the contract was canceled for financial reasons. Ultimately, the contract was awarded only for the creation of three small IPV patrol ships.

The South African Navy will be the first of the well-known customers of the small patrol ships of the Damen Stan Patrol 6211 project. The ship of the designated project, like most other patrol projects developed and produced at the Damen enterprises, has original bow contours with a vertical stem, which experts call the Ax Bow (Ax-shaped nose). This bow was originally designed by Damen engineers specifically for the Sea Ax-class high-speed transport ships, which are widely used in offshore oil and gas production.
The length of the hull of the Damen Stan Patrol 6211 patrol ships reaches 62.2 meters, the width is 11 meters, and the maximum draft is 4 meters. The power plant is diesel four-shaft, the maximum declared power is 11,520 kW. The maximum speed is 26.5 knots, at this speed the ship can travel up to 4000 nautical miles. The ship can accommodate up to 62 people, including the crew and additional passengers. It is noted that in 2014, as part of the Canter program, the DSCT shipyard (owned by Damen) built two harbor tugs for the South African Navy according to the Damen Tug 2909 project, the same shipyard will be engaged in the construction of small patrol ships of the coastal zone Stan Patrol 6211.
