Development of the RDO-3221 KOMONDOR CBRN light armored biochemical reconnaissance vehicle began in 2010 in response to a tender announced in 2009 by the Hungarian National Development Agency (Nemzeti Fejlesztési Ügynökség - NFÜ). As a result, the car became a joint development of the companies Gamma Technical and Respirátor zrt. The RDO-3221 KOMONDOR is designed to replace the current WMD reconnaissance vehicles in the Hungarian Defense Forces (VSBRDM-2 and VSBTR NBC), but it is also designed to meet the needs of foreign customers.
Respirátor was established in 1928 by the German company AUER and the Hungarian company Defense Treasur to supply the army with respiratory protection. Today it is the only company in Hungary producing respiratory protection and is wholly Hungarian-owned. The Gamma Technical company specializes in the production of radiation and chemical reconnaissance equipment.
The prototype of the RDO-3221 KOMONDOR armored vehicle with a 4x4 wheel arrangement in the version of a radio-biochemical reconnaissance vehicle with the appropriate special equipment was built in 2011 and has been undergoing comprehensive tests since September of the same year. Currently, two additional samples in 4x4 and 6x6 versions are in pilot production.
The armored car is a typical MRAP armored car with a load-bearing armored capsule and a V-shaped bottom. Ballistic and mine protection RDO-3221 complies with the NATO STANAG 4569 Ed.1 standard and is achieved using metal and composite materials. The level of ballistic protection corresponds to the STANAG 4569 Level 3 standard, "the car is protected from small and medium caliber bullets." Mine protection corresponds to level 3a / 3b. The hull has a hatch for installing a platform with various weapons, including a remotely controlled turret, into its opening. The commander's and driver's seats are equipped with night vision devices.
