"Improvised Explosive Device" (in translation - homemade explosive devices) have recently become the main source of loss of personnel of peacekeeping units and forces of "restoration of democracy" in the Middle East. The main purpose of the Improvised Explosive Device is to be installed on or near roads as mine devices that are detonated while driving at the place of installation of vehicles. Of the wide range of methods for detonating improvised mine devices, the most common of them is detonation with a remote radio-controlled detonator.

The developer of this active system is Cassidian, a division of EADS. The equipment on which this system of active type "Vehicle Protection Jammer" will be installed, according to the developers, will be provided with reliable protection against homemade mine devices with radio remote control.

The principle of operation of "Vehicle Protection Jammer" is based on listening to the radio air in order to search for radio signals that can be used as a remote detonator of a mine device fuse. When a signal is detected from a vehicle operating in the immediate vicinity, on which an active "Vehicle Protection Jammer" system is installed, it instantly (one microsecond) begins to transmit chaotic signals at the detected frequency. This action completely distorts the original signal at the detected frequency, which in practice should lead to blocking the activation of the mine device charge. Today, various types of active suppression systems are used in service, in general, they have a certain drawback - they constantly emit a strong radio signal in a wide frequency range. Such systems have rather large overall characteristics and require a powerful source of energy for their constant operation.

The Vehicle Protection Jammer only uses the power of its transmitter when the receiver detects a specific signal. The transmitter turns on and emits a chaotic signal only at the detected frequency. Such an organization of the system's operation made it possible to use a very small source of energy for operation, for example, an ordinary generator installed on the equipment used can cope with such a task. The overall characteristics of the "Vehicle Protection Jammer" will make it possible to install this mine protection even in an ordinary passenger car - it will easily fit in its trunk.
