The new generation nuclear submarine will be launched today, June 15, in Severodvinsk. Dmitry Medvedev will take part in the ceremony. This is the second visit of the head of state to the city of shipbuilders. The first took place in July 2009.

The multipurpose nuclear submarine of the fourth generation "Severodvinsk" (project 885 "Ash"), designed by the St. Petersburg bureau "Malakhit", was built at the shipyard PO "Sevmash". At the same time, it was laid down in 1993, but the completion of the work was delayed due to the constant lack of financial resources and qualified labor at the enterprise. In addition, the delay was due to the fact that completely new and most modern materials were used in the construction. The descent of Severodvinsk was planned for May 7, but was postponed for a month.

In the summer, the submarine will enter its first trials. The fleet is expected to receive the submarine in 2011. After its commissioning, it is planned to build six more such submarines. Last year, the second nuclear submarine of project 885 called Kazan was laid down at Sevmash. The Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, Vladimir Vysotsky, then said that the construction of a new submarine was unplanned, since it was not provided for by the state rearmament program.

According to experts, the boat has no analogues. Its hull is made of high-strength steel and is rubber coated to reduce noise and reduce reflections from onboard sonars. In addition, the submarine has a pop-up rescue chamber for the entire crew of 85 or (according to other estimates) 93 people.

The nuclear submarine is equipped with a new Ajax sonar system, eight missile launchers, supersonic cruise missiles and universal deep-sea homing torpedoes. The displacement is from 8, 6 to 9, 5 thousand tons.

According to experts, "Severodvinsk" is hardly noticeable for hydroacoustic radars. It is comparable to the Sea Wolf nuclear submarine, but more versatile than its American counterpart.

According to the plans to modernize the Russian submarine fleet, Project 885 Yasen boats will become one of four types of submarines put into service. One of the features of the Soviet and Russian submarine fleets was that they were armed with various types of submarines, which significantly complicated their operation and repair.
