The M60 Phoenix, the main tank of the Jordanian Army, is an upgrade to the M60A3. It was designed by order of King Abdullah II by the KADDB design bureau. The morally and technically obsolete M60A3 could no longer compete with modern tanks from other states, primarily in terms of armament and protection. The M60 Phoenix is an economical modular main tank upgrade with increased firepower, mobility and survivability.
The armor protection in the M60 Phoenix has been significantly increased. Additional armor packages have been added to the hull and turret. The level III / IV update includes the installation of active protection. This tank is equipped with a laser security system, as well as a camouflage system. The combat vehicle is also equipped with an automatic fire extinguishing system and an NBC protection system. It is worth noting that the protection of the M60 Phoenix can be changed depending on the requirements of the military operation.
The 105 mm rifled gun was replaced by the 120 mm smoothbore gun. Firepower and destructive power have been greatly improved. In the M60A3, it was not possible to hit enemy targets in the dynamics of movement in the M60 Phoenix, this drawback was eliminated while the rate of fire was increased to 10 rounds per minute.
The medium armament of the tank consists of a 7.62 mm machine gun and another 12.7 mm MG machine gun, built into the turret roof.
The M60 Phoenix is equipped with an integrated Raytheon digital fire control system. It has been significantly improved, the probability of hitting the target with the first projectile has been increased several times. Phoenix is also equipped with a digital data system.
The M60 Phoenix crew consists of four people - commander, gunner, loader and driver.
A diesel engine developing 950 horsepower is used as a power unit. In addition, the improved hydropneumatic suspension allows the M60 Phoenix to increase its weight to 62 - 63 t, without significant loss of mobility.
