In response to the creation of NATO's Eurocomponent of anti-missile defense, the head of the Russian Federation D. Medvedev on November 22, 2011, gave an order to immediately put the Voronezh-DM radar station on alert. A week later, the early warning radar was put into operation a missile attack warning system.

The head of the Russian Federation, who was present at the solemn ceremony of putting the radar on alert, said that if this signal is not correctly assessed by NATO countries, then Russia will have nothing to do but to start deploying new and conserved means of countering the veiled aggression of the North Atlantic Alliance.

Prior to commissioning, the station had been operating for the whole year in a test experimental combat mode, during which no serious malfunctions were detected.

The station itself is installed in the Kaliningrad region, in the town of Pionersky. The radar completely covers even the zones of responsibility of the stations located in Baranovichi and Mukachevo. From December 1, all stations will operate in the united aerospace defense system, which will include all air defense and missile defense systems and systems, as well as space control systems.

The "Voronezh-DM" radar station operates in the decimeter frequency range and is made according to the "high factory readiness" system, which means that the station is capable of high mobility if necessary. Voronezh-DM is a modular station (23 technical modules in total) and can be installed within 18-24 months. For example, the Daryal station has more than 4000 blocks and is deployed within 60-100 months.

The station is capable of monitoring the entire territory of Europe and the Atlantic, detecting objects located in the spheres of air and airless space, accompanying them and transmitting all the information collected about the objects to the control point.

The Russian Federation, together with this station, is already three "Voronezh" - this radar, the "Voronezh-M" radar in Lekhtusi and the "Voronezh-DM" radar in the city of Armavir. The construction of the Voronezh-VP radar station continues, which will be installed at the base station in the town of Usolye-Sibirskoye to control the territory of China.

The Voronezh-DM radar station can constantly monitor up to half a thousand different objects at a distance of up to 6,000 kilometers.

The base of the station is an antenna phased array, a quickly assembled module for service personnel and a number of containers with technical equipment, which allows not only to quickly install, but also to carry out replacement or modernization at the lowest cost. Energy consumption has been reduced in comparison with existing stations and is less than one megawatt; Daryal radar consumes 50 times more electricity.

The cost of the complex was announced back in 2008 and is approximately equal to 3 billion rubles, the Daryal radar station, built in Azerbaijan, cost Russia almost 20 billion rubles.
