According to ArmyTimes, in May 2011, the US Army will announce a tender for the development and supply of new assault rifles. In the future, they will be used by the military along with the upgraded M4A1. This competition is expected to run for three years. Based on the results of the tender, a contract worth $ 30 million must be signed with the winner for the production and supply of machines.

It is expected that after the official announcement of the tender, all participants will have to submit their proposals two months in advance. Next, the US Army will test this new firearm in 12-18 months. During the shooting, it is planned to use up more than two million cartridges. Experimental shooting from each proposed machine gun will be carried out until it is completely worn out. First of all, the military will evaluate the weapon's ability to fire accurately as it wears out.

The US Army does not plan to introduce any restrictions on the caliber of weapons. The maximum sighting range of this firing should not be less than 500 meters. It is allowed to use automation, which works on the principle of removing powder gases acting on the gas piston or on the bolt carrier. There were no requirements for interchangeable barrels of various calibers and sizes.

In addition to the tender for the supply of assault rifles, the US Army plans to carry out the second stage of modernization of the M4 assault rifle. At the first stage of modernization, the weapon was brought to the M4A1 version, which received a heavier barrel, full automatic fire (the M4 had the ability to fire in bursts of three or single) with a higher rate.

The next stage of modernization of the M4A1 will begin shortly and involves improving the efficiency and accuracy of fire. The third phase will start in 18 months. This machine will receive an improved protection system against the ingress of dirt and improved gas evacuation.
