To ensure combat alert of mobile ground-based missile systems in the Russian strategic missile forces, a wide range of different equipment is used. One of the samples of this kind is the 15TS56M Typhoon-M combat anti-sabotage vehicle (BPDM), designed to escort and protect PGRK on patrol routes. Reportedly, more than 30 units of such equipment and dozens of simulators for training crews have already been delivered.

First deliveries

BPDM 15TS56M "Typhoon-M" was developed by order of the Strategic Missile Forces within the framework of cooperation between NPO Strela and the Military-Industrial Company. Development work started in 2007 and ended in 2012. Soon, mass production began at a slow pace, and the first samples were handed over to the customer.

In August 2013, the Ministry of Defense announced the beginning of the service of the first serial Typhoon-M. The car was handed over to the Serpukhov branch of the Strategic Missile Forces Academy. Peter the Great. The Academy has started training crews for future airborne vehicles. At the same time, it was reported that by the end of the year, one of the formations of the missile forces would receive new equipment.

The execution of this order started on the specified date and was completed in 2014. The 54th Guards Missile Division (Ivanovo Region), armed with the Topol-M and Yars missile systems, became the first combat operator of the Typhoon-M.

According to the plans of that time, BPDM 15TS56M were to be supplied to all formations operating PGRK. This fact determined the required amount of equipment and its role in the troops. As further messages showed, the plans are being successfully implemented.

Count for tens

Strela and VPK continue to build and deliver Typhoons-M to this day. Every year the customer receives significant quantities of such equipment, due to which the re-equipment of the security units of the Strategic Missile Forces is carried out. Already in the first years of mass production, it was possible to reach significant rates and bring the score of equipment to dozens.

So, in 2016, the Strategic Missile Forces received 14 anti-sabotage vehicles. In the next 2017, 12 units were purchased. Simultaneously, the production and delivery of training complexes for the training of crews was carried out. In 2016, the troops received 10 complexes. The plans of that time provided for the purchase of another 20 simulators until 2020 inclusive.

A few days ago, the information support group of the Strategic Missile Forces announced the latest information on the Typhoon-M fleet and plans for the near future. It is indicated that over the past five years, the troops have received more than 30 anti-sabotage vehicles. By the end of this year, delivery of 5 more units is expected. In 2021, new arrivals will continue, but the volumes of plans and orders have not been specified. Also, the official announcement mentions the supply of simulators, but without specifying specific numbers.

Today and tomorrow

From the available data, it follows that in 2020-21. the total number of BPDM 15TS56M in parts of the Strategic Missile Forces will reach the level of 35-40 units. Also, the implementation of the old plans for the supply of 20 simulators by 2020 is currently being completed. Their number will reach 30 units. It can be assumed that the production of BPDM and auxiliary complexes will not stop there.

The aim of the current serial production of Typhoons-M is to completely re-equip the anti-sabotage units of the Strategic Missile Forces. Each of the 12 missile divisions has a separate guard and reconnaissance battalion (OBOR). Half of the divisions operate PGRK, which makes special requirements for equipping its OBOR. Such parts require a number of specimens of a special kind, incl. combat anti-sabotage vehicles.

The delivery of 35-40 BPDM type 15TS56M will make it possible to equip at least most of the OBOR of the Strategic Missile Forces divisions. Further production of such equipment will ensure a complete transition to it, and will also create certain reserves. Mass production of training complexes, in turn, will provide high-quality training for crews from all battalions.

For reconnaissance and combat

BPDM "Typhoon-M" is intended to accompany the PGRK on patrol routes and starting positions; such a technique is capable of monitoring the terrain and searching for threats, responding to them as needed. As the name of the vehicle suggests, its main task is to counter enemy sabotage groups.

The 15TS56M is based on the serial armored personnel carrier BTR-82 and retains its main elements - the body, the power plant, the chassis, etc. Inside and outside the hull, new units are mounted to ensure the solution of the tasks of reconnaissance and defeat of the enemy, communications and control, etc.

Instead of the standard tower on the roof of the hull, a remotely controlled 6S21 turret installation developed by the Central Research Institute "Burevestnik" is mounted. It is equipped with a PKTM machine gun and optical-electronic devices for operation in the daytime and at night.

Behind the installation on the roof of the hull is a lifting mast with a set of reconnaissance and surveillance equipment. The machine has a small-sized radar and optical-electronic equipment. Provides all-round visibility with detection of equipment at distances of up to 10 km, people - up to 5 km. UAV "Eleron-3SV" is used for long-range reconnaissance. In the mode of data transmission to the operator panel, it can work at a distance of up to 25 km.

An electronic warfare system is included in the on-board equipment complex. The jamming station is designed to suppress the radio channels for controlling explosive devices used by the enemy.

Onboard electronics allows processing data from reconnaissance equipment and from a turret with the subsequent issuance of information. The Typhoon-M crew maintains constant communication with the command post and other vehicles on the route and can respond in a timely manner to any threats.

The operation of the Typhoon-M BPDM is operated by a crew of three. The troop compartment accommodates up to six fighters with weapons.

The training complex for the BPDM 15TS56M provides training for all crew members to solve all arising tasks and to work in any possible conditions. It is possible to simulate any sections of patrol routes and simulate any tactical situation.

Strategic Missile Forces against ambushes

In the Russian Strategic Missile Forces, a permanent watch of the PGRK is organized on patrol routes and at launch positions. Complexes in motion or in parking lots can become a target for sabotage groups of the enemy, which forces them to take action - to reconnoiter routes, look for dangerous objects and constantly prepare for a possible attack.

To solve such problems, the Strategic Missile Forces have a whole set of tools. PGRK are accompanied by gunners on armored personnel carriers, anti-sabotage vehicles "Typhoon-M", remote mine clearance machines "Foliage", etc. Having such a material part, the security unit can monitor the situation within a radius of several kilometers, identify potentially dangerous objects, and then take the necessary measures.

In such a system, the Typhoon-M BPDM is a key element that determines the ability of units to identify hazards and risks. The number of such equipment in the troops is gradually increasing, and with it the safety of patrolling the PGRK is growing, which has a positive effect on the combat effectiveness of the missile forces as a whole.
