Submachine gun: yesterday, today, tomorrow. What parameters should be effective bullets for submachine guns, the purpose of which is the fight against terrorists? If the ShA-12 assault rifle achieves a striking effect due to the 12.7-mm caliber, then is it possible to create something different, based on the data not only of modern technology, but also of historical science?

Tips from ancient burial grounds
In the previous material, where it was told about a bullet in the form of a disk with a sharp cutting edge, it was said that even arrowheads of this shape were found in ancient burial grounds. Disc-shaped! That is, they were designed exclusively for inflicting a wide cut wound. But there were also known purely armor-piercing arrows that did not rotate in flight. These tips were narrow, faceted, capable of pushing the rings of chain mail, or also narrow, but flat, resembling a chisel or chisel in shape. These were already calculated to cut through the rings of the chain mail. Well, a completely flat tip reduced the possibility of ricochet when hitting the target at an angle.

It is connected by a gear train with a rotary mechanism, and each time the shutter is cocked, it turns it 90 degrees. At the same time, a cartridge gets inside it, which is pushed out of the store by an L-shaped lever.
It just so happened that we are considering bullets for firearms of exclusively cylindrical shape, although earlier there were also square-section bullets intended for shooting exclusively at “infidels” and “savages”.

Well, what if you create a cartridge with a high-speed bullet of increased penetrating action, which, like the arrow of an ancient bow, could rotate under the influence of the incoming air flow? By the way, there are impeller bullets for smooth-bore hunting weapons. Moreover, it would be good to make it so that this bullet, without violating any of the Hague and other conventions, would be small in itself, but inflict well, just very large wounds, so that neither a bulletproof vest nor injections of analgesics would leave the terrorist has not the slightest chance. A task for TRIZ, isn't it? Make a small one large, not rotating - rotating, and even so that the tip is very sharp, but so that there are no problems with sending such ammunition into the chamber.
Bullet with the profile of the letter "H"
But what if we make a multi-caliber bullet H-shaped in its profile and equip it with a poly-wedge-shaped tip made of tungsten-molybdenum alloy? Moreover, it is clear that not the entire bullet should be made of it, but only its warhead, and it should be connected to the rest of the bullet so firmly that, in accordance with international conventions, this bullet would not disintegrate in the human body. Hypothetically, it may well look like a flat parallelepiped with the front part in the form of two interconnected … "chisels" sharpened in opposite directions. There is a jumper between them to prevent the air flow from escaping. Something similar was used in ancient arrowheads. Due to the difference in sharpening directions, they flew, rotating in flight. But our pool has four more drop-down stabilizers, which in any case will increase the accuracy of its flight, regardless of whether it rotates or not. Thus, it turns out not one, but several calibers at once: a horizontal caliber of 22 mm (this is the width of the bullet itself); vertical tail caliber 24 mm; diagonal gauge (that is, the diagonal between the stabilizers) 32 mm. The caliber of the bullet body itself is 4 mm. With folded "wings" 7, 6 mm. Length 25 mm. The maximum diameter of a flat sleeve is 9 mm. Length 24 mm. For attaching the bullet, a narrower muzzle is provided on it, into which the bullet enters along with the stabilizers folded and pressed against it. That is, if it rotates in flight, the inlet hole will be … not less than 33 mm in diameter. If not, but at the same time it will be possible to achieve satisfactory accuracy at a distance of 100-200 m, again, like most modern submachine guns, then we will get a hole in the shape of the letter "H", and also large enough to suppress the criminal activity of any, even the most notorious terrorist.
The cartridge turned out to be similar to a rifle and at the same time quite large. With a sleeve thickness of 9 mm, 30 rounds stacked in one row on top of each other, in the store, it should take 27 cm plus a spring and a feeder, so that the magazine for such cartridges sticking out from the bottom of the submachine gun will immediately turn it into an extremely uncomfortable weapon for the shooter. Therefore, a layout with a horizontal magazine location was chosen, much like its installation on the German G11 rifle and P90 submachine gun. But only it is inserted not in front, but on the left side. At the same time, the cartridges are located in it vertically, bullets down. Once inside the receiver, they find themselves inside a special cylindrical rotary mechanism, with which each successive cartridge is installed on the chambering line into the chamber.
Simple enough device
The receiver of such a submachine gun may well be of a simple cylindrical shape, therefore the bolt to it is also cylindrical, on two springs and two guide rods. Well, let's say, like the old American M3. But in front of the barrel there is a rotary mechanism in the form of a cylinder with a hole for the cartridge. The magazine is installed so that its receptacle with the cartridge on the feed chute is above it. The cylinder is connected by a connecting rod with an L-shaped spring-loaded pusher, which is located in the "superstructure" above the swivel mechanism. When the bolt moves back, the cylinder rotates and its hole aligns with the cartridge feed hole. The L-shaped pusher pushes the cartridge out of the magazine brackets, it falls down and is inside the cylinder. Moreover, inside it, the cartridge is additionally held by a magnet, so that when firing upwards, it cannot fly out of it into the receiver.
In the front of the bolt there is a rectangular protrusion with an extractor, which enters the opening of the cylinder of the rotary mechanism and sends a cartridge from it into the chamber, after which a shot is fired. The trigger can also be triggered by passing the firing pin with the hammer through the bolt, which will increase the firing accuracy. Although the shape of the chamber is simple, there is a special "expansion chamber" just behind it. There is free space there, and in front of the entrance to the barrel there are four protrusions, reminiscent of bulldozer blades, which with their sharp edges go under the folded bullet stabilizers.
The case contains a powder charge of two types of gunpowder: 20% fast-burning and 80% slow-burning, armored. When the primer ignites, the fast-burning gunpowder immediately flares up, the pressure instantly increases and the bullet enters the bore. The protrusions in the chamber straighten its stabilizers, they slide along their curved surfaces and fall into the side vertical channels of the letter "H". Then the main powder charge begins to burn, which accelerates the bullet to maximum speed. The front part is heavy, made of tungsten-molybdenum alloy. The back of the "box" is made hollow and lighter. The gas pressure expands its walls, and they fit snugly against the bore.
Lewis cooling
The barrel itself can have a different design. The simplest can be … a primitive steel bar with fins for cooling from the outside, in which a channel of the desired shape is made by an electroerosive method. In addition, it has two holes that serve to cool the barrel from the inside. That is, everything works the same as in the Lewis machine gun. Powder gases, when fired, fill the muzzle-flame arrester, a vacuum arises in it, which draws air through the barrel. In principle, it can be thin-walled, repeating the profile of the bullet channel in it, but this is the best thing for process engineers to think about.
Again, let us immediately make a reservation that the "sample" shown here is just a model, for exactly the same model of a completely hypothetical cartridge. All this is done in "plastic", because in this way it is much easier to imagine it than to consider it in the drawings and diagrams. The main thing is to accurately determine whether the bullet of such or similar device will rotate in flight, hit the target at acceptable distances with acceptable accuracy, and whether it will be more effective than existing bullets of traditional design. And if - yes, then why, in that case, she should not be born, and with her, and about such a submachine gun ?!
As for the shortcomings, this sample also has them, and they are visible, as they say, with the naked eye. A powerful cartridge is a long receiver and, accordingly, a large overall length, because the barrel of this PP must also be long in order to properly disperse its high-velocity bullet. Due to its shape, it will most likely not be possible to put on a muffler on the barrel, moreover, with it, the length of the weapon will become completely prohibitive. Although it is clear that such a powerful weapon cannot have a short length by definition.
