The ground forces of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces are beginning to receive the newest Type 12 anti-ship coastal missile system. The new Japanese BKRK is designed to replace the Type 88 BKRK equipped with SSM-1 anti-ship missiles.

BPKRK "Type 12" was developed in the scientific research technical institute of the Ministry of Defense of Japan in cooperation with the company "Mitsubishi". The complex was equipped with an upgraded SSM-1 missile.

A new guidance system has been installed with satellite-based GPS tracking. The complex received a new chassis weighing 19,000 kilograms. A mobile launcher (six containers) was installed on the new chassis. The complex includes a detection station, made on the Type 73 chassis, a mobile command center and TPM. The last prototype tests were successfully completed at the end of 2011.

In 2012, funds were allocated (about $ 250 million) for the purchase of a pair of new Type 12 complexes with 18 missiles. The delivery of the complexes to the Japanese self-defense forces is expected by the end of 2012. For the next year, a little more funds have been allocated than in 2012, it is likely that another pair of Type 12 air defense missile systems will be purchased, but with 24 missiles (one full salvo each in stock).

Complex "Type 88", which will be replaced on alert, is in service with 5 missile regiments and in the training center of the Japanese Army. It was also developed by Mitsubishi for the Japanese Self-Defense Forces. It has been in service for almost fifteen years. The batteries of this complex form the basis of the strike units of the Japanese coastal defense. An interesting episode was the testing of the complex in the United States (1987), where it was highly praised by American and Japanese military experts. The modernized complex called "Type 90" received a more modern missile, which has better protection against electronic warfare means. The main role of these complexes is to provide assistance to the ships of the Pacific Fleet.

Since 1994, Mitsubishi has been developing a new SCRC project called XSSM-2 - the missiles of the complex will have a range of up to 250 kilometers and a vertical launch.

In principle, the new complex is another (deep) modernization - the units and equipment were replaced with a more modern one. There is no talk of a new SSM-2 missile. The next 2013, for the self-defense forces, will be the most difficult financially, but the military still planned to allocate money (about $ 15 million) for the development of new anti-ship missiles.

Since there are no fundamental differences between the old and new complexes, the combat strength of one battery, consisting of 11 vehicles with equipment and weapons, will not change:

- PU firing;

- 4 launchers, made on a truck chassis from Mitsubishi;

- vehicle radar detection with HEADLIGHTS;

- communication station;

- 4 TPM;

The fire group consists of 4 batteries of the main strike unit and consists of a total of 55 pieces of equipment:

- 44 units - machines with 4 batteries;

- one KShM;

- two cars with radar;

- 8 vehicles with communication equipment.
