Servicemen of the International Mine Action Center of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in the spring of 2016 demined the historical and residential part of Syrian Palmyra. 825 hectares of territory, 79 km of roads and 8507 various objects (buildings) were cleared. 17,456 explosives were found and neutralized, including 432 improvised explosive devices.

For its successes in service, the Mine Action Center was awarded the Diploma of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the RF Armed Forces and on October 4, the center received the Battle Banner.

Since December 3, 2016, the consolidated demining squad has begun demining Syrian Aleppo. In a month and a half, about 2 thousand hectares of territory, 680 km of roads, 3, 3 thousand various objects (buildings) were cleared. At the same time, more than 25 thousand explosive objects were discovered and neutralized, including about 13 thousand improvised explosive devices.

The main engineering means and complexes used by the military in the demining of objects in Syria

It is a lightweight armored vehicle with remote control and demining systems. This multifunctional robotic complex is designed to make passages in minefields and clean the area from antipersonnel mines and explosive objects with an explosive mass of up to 1 kg.

Depending on the trawling equipment used, the machine weighs 6–7 tons, its height is about 1.4 m, the sapper robot is able to climb a wall up to 1.2 m high.

The machine is controlled by radio using a remote control. The operator of the complex is located at a safe distance and can work at a distance of up to 1000 m from the machine. The trawling speed is up to 2 km / h with a continuous trawling strip width of 1.75 m.

The machine is also equipped with a set of attachments, consisting of dumps and trawls of various types. The sapper unit itself plows the ground, undermining all the mines found during the trawling.

The engineering troops have accumulated significant experience in their operation: they have proven themselves positively during experimental military operation when performing tasks to clean up the area from explosive objects in the Chechen Republic and the Republic of Ingushetia, as well as when performing tasks for demining the Syrian Palmyra in 2016. Currently, the complexes are used for the complete cleaning of the area outside the dense urban development of Aleppo.

The mine detector is designed to search for anti-tank and anti-personnel mines, bodies, fuses and parts of which are made of metal. It allows the operator to classify the detected objects according to the totality of their electrophysical methods.

Provides detection and selection according to generalized parameters of anti-tank and anti-personnel mines placed in the ground (snow, water).

The portable mine detector is made using modern materials and a modern radio-electronic base. The use of plastic helped to significantly reduce the weight of the device (2, 7 kg).

Designed to protect the sapper from the damaging factors of the explosion of anti-personnel mines of high-explosive and fragmentation action and the damaging effect of bullets of firearms, to increase the safety of the sapper and prevent the likelihood of death when clearing the terrain and objects manually and making passages in mine-explosive obstacles.

Each set includes: six suits - protective kits of the sapper "Sokol", six protective helmets. Each suit has two transport bags and two sets of thermal underwear: summer and winter. Also relying on a combat knife "Vzmakh-3" and a flashlight.

The new kit has no analogues. There are similar elements, but there are no kits in the same assembly.

The suit is considerably lighter than its predecessor and weighs about 8 kg. This significantly increases the duration of the sappers' work. Titanium protective panels have been replaced with extruded polyethylene, which also reduces the weight of the suit. In addition, the protection of the collar area and vital organs has been strengthened.

Designed to search for anti-tank and anti-personnel mines in hulls made of any materials. It has two independent search channels: radio wave and induction, each of which has its own search device and electrical circuit, combined in a single design. The mine detector provides search for anti-tank and anti-personnel mines in three modes of operation: radio wave, induction and combined.

Designed to search for anti-tank and anti-personnel mines in hulls made of any materials. Provides a search for anti-tank and anti-personnel mines planted in the ground, snow or water and on the surface of the ground or snow.

The RVM-2M uses a new element base, which made it possible to improve its basic search parameters in comparison with the RVM-2 mine detector.

The principle of operation of RVM-2M is based on recording the difference in dielectric constant and electrical conductivity between the mine and the environment in which the mine is installed (soil, water, snow).

Designed for remote detection of mine explosive devices with electronic fuses: electronic components, circuits and transistors. Antenna unit and a radar unit with a control panel are located in front, in the hands of a sapper.

It is able to detect explosive devices located behind various obstacles: walls made of concrete and brick, fences made of barbed wire and metal mesh, under asphalt and concrete roads. The detection range of guided mines and improvised explosive devices reaches 30 m.

The crews of mine detection dogs perform the most important tasks in the search for explosive objects, including improvised explosive devices that do not contain metal, which, along with the use of other portable search means and remote detection means, constitutes a single and most complete set of tools designed for mine clearance and cleaning the area from explosive objects.

In December 2016, it became known that during the demining of Syrian Aleppo, the Russian military found ammunition produced by the United States, Germany and Bulgaria. In one of the headquarters, Russian sappers found 122 mm mortar shells, shells for multiple launch rocket systems, hand grenades, grenade launchers, and howitzers shells. According to the military, such supplies would be enough for an entire battalion.

On December 23, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced the completion of the operation to free Aleppo from the militants. Currently, Russian sappers are helping to clear buildings in the city. Before leaving Aleppo, representatives of the "moderate opposition" mined "literally everything," even children's toys, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
