Dear Readers! This is the sixth part of the review devoted to the civilian versions of the BRDM-2. The previous parts are here: BRDM. Scouts in civilian life. Part one;

Today I continue to review the versions of the BRDM, modernized in specialized companies.
Campaign "Perspective", St. Petersburg
It has been working since 2008 in the sales market for conversion special and automotive equipment that was stored in the armed forces and was not used. During the storage period, the machines underwent routine maintenance to ensure their working condition.
All cars undergo pre-sale training, which includes:
- replacement of technical fluids, filter elements, batteries, etc.;
- inspection and repair of main components, assemblies, electrical equipment;
- the necessary additional equipment.
At the request of the customer, installation of special and additional equipment is carried out, the replacement of gasoline power units with diesel ones. Delivery of equipment is made from a warehouse or on order.
Oddly enough, but our first tuned BRDM-2 was bought by a girl from St. Petersburg, who came to my mother and I just for a ride. Yes, I didn't just buy it, but moved to it from my 600 Mercedes. She explained this by the fact that she was constantly cut off on the road and had already been hit by a car several times. It sounds like a joke, we even thought at first that she was just joking, but it's true.
In our campaign, the BRDM-2 is the absolute leader in sales among civilian conversion equipment. You are probably now thinking that the first advantage is the monstrousness of the car, with which no one wants to mess with on the road? Perhaps. But in fact, this story reveals two other much more important points:
1) Ease of management
Even a girl can cope with the control of this military equipment in the past. They usually say that everything is simple with control, just like on the old GAZ-66. If you didn’t have a chance to drive 66, then let's put it simply: the only thing you need to get used to, compared to a regular passenger car, is the double clutch release. The reason for this is the gearbox developed in the early 60s, which does not sync automatically.
However, when you get a feel for the car, you can easily get by with a single squeeze: this is what our practice shows.
2) Free movement on public roads
On the BRDM-2, you can move freely on public roads. Neither the BTR-60, nor the BTR-70, nor the BTR-80 can boast of this, not to mention the all-terrain vehicles with tracked propellers.
Here are some examples of the modernization of the BRDM carried out by the Perspektiva campaign:
BRDM-2 cash-in-transit vehicle
The armored car was purchased for transporting gold ore and screening in the Krasnoyarsk Territory after an incident with an attack on a group of collectors.
Windows with a panoramic view are made of armored laminated safety glass of B3 protection class (corresponds to the 3rd protection class in accordance with GOST R 51136-2008 and 3P class in accordance with GOST 30826-2001). For more convenient and efficient loading / unloading of valuable cargo, the side door was borrowed from the armored personnel carrier.
Additional wheels were removed. With its complete set, the collector vehicle strongly resembles the version of the BRDM produced by the 22nd Armored Repair Plant in the city of Balashikha. The customer found this modification to be optimal for his tasks. The main and most important difference between the "collector" and the serial BRDM is improved visibility and enhanced booking.
Previously, precious metals were transported in Ural vehicles, the booking of which was not provided properly. In total, two cars were delivered.
Mercedes Engine R4
This version was ordered and produced in 2012. The main tuning feature of this BRDM-2 is the installation of an in-line “four” diesel engine produced by Mercedes-Benz while maintaining the original gearbox and PTO (power take-off). Thanks to this, the car retained its amphibious properties.
Another "feature" of the Mercedes Engine R4 was the installation of the SUEPT (removable universal expeditionary transformer platform), on which passengers can be accommodated while the car moves through the water.
Mercedes Engine R6
The following year, the same customer ordered another BRDM-2. At that time, the success was consolidated by the installation of a more powerful 6-cylinder Mercedes-Benz diesel engine with 170 hp. But everyone knows that off-road, happiness is not in horsepower, but in torque! This inline-six has 620 Nm, which is almost 2 times higher than the standard unmodified gasoline engine, and makes this car ideal even for the most severe jeeping.
Since the equipment was supposed to be used in pairs, we did not install SUEPT on this car, and an enlarged closed trunk took up the free space at the stern.
What category of rights is needed for this miracle? Automotive C or tractor as for a wheeled all-terrain vehicle?
This is perhaps the most popular question. A tractor driver's license with an open category "A3" (AIII) is required. To study for this tractor category, you must have an automotive category "C". Previously, the BRDM-2 required a tractor driver's license with a category "C" for a 140 hp engine. with. or category "D" in the case of purchasing a BRDM with a 170 hp engine modified by us. with.
What about registration with the traffic police, how will the BRDM be registered?
It is registered with Gostekhnadzor, in the "Passport of a self-propelled vehicle and other types of equipment" they will write: "TRANSPORTER WHEEL GAZ-41 (BRDM-2)".
How far did that girl go, because at first it is not easy to learn how to double squeeze and re-gas. And the BRDM, traveling in the general stream and suddenly stalled, is a rather strong sight.
On that day, the girl mastered a double squeeze for 4 plus, and quite tolerably shifted gears even on the off-road. By the way, when you have a good feel for the BRDM, you can even not press the clutch 2 times - but this, of course, is already a skill. In no case do we recommend trying this trick for beginners. And in general, double squeezing has not interfered with a single box. If the issue of double release and rebasing is a key issue when choosing, you can install a diesel from MAN or Mercedes-Benz with a new gearbox, which is equipped with synchronizers.
Since 2008, more than 60 pieces of equipment have been serviced within the walls of the Perspective Campaign laboratory. In 2013, the laboratory performed work on the repair, restoration and tuning of all-terrain vehicles:
- 6 BRDM-2 have undergone full pre-sale training. 5 of them were modernized and retrofitted in accordance with the tasks of the customer;
- 4 BTR-80 with pre-sale preparation and additional equipment of the passenger compartment (seats, heaters, lighting);
- 2 MTLB machines, with pre-sale preparation;
- 4 MTLBu cars, with pre-sale preparation, with additional equipment with a cabin, shelter, heater and pre-heater;
- 2 GT-T with pre-sale preparation, 1 - with a shelter, 1 - with a loading platform;
- 2 GT-SM with pre-sale preparation for operation in swampy areas;
- 1 GT-MU with pre-sale preparation.
Another version of the BRDM-2: for fishing and outdoor walks. Installed the same SUEPT (removable universal expeditionary platform-transformer).
At the stern, there is a removable platform-trunk with the ability to attach two benches and a barbecue. Just imagine: you enter the water, fish and immediately cook barbecue or fry fish. Lyapota!
