Everyone knows the Kharkiv Design Bureau for Mechanical Engineering named after V. I. Morozov as a design bureau with a long history in the production of tanks, everyone is also well aware of the new design bureaus - these are combat units such as the Oplot tank, the Yatagan tank, the T-80UD tank, the Athlet BREM repair and recovery vehicle, the BTR4 armored personnel carrier, the armored personnel carrier DOZOR-B, armored personnel carrier BTR-3U. But, besides this, the Kharkov Design Bureau makes excellent modernizations of equipment that has long served its purpose. I would like to present this technique to your attention.

Combat heavy infantry vehicles (BMT) are intended for combat operations both as part of tank units and subunits, being with them in the same battle formations, and independently. At the same time, paratroopers can fire from a car or drop off and continue the battle on foot. The use of BMTs with weapons, protection and maneuverability, the same as those of tanks, ensures close interaction on the battlefield of tanks and infantry paratroopers with the fullest use of the strengths of these types of troops. The fire control system (FCS) and armament of the BMT ensure the detection and defeat of enemy armored vehicles and infantry as effectively as the tank's FCS.

BMT can be used in offensive and defensive operations, in conducting large-scale hostilities and in a zone of local conflicts, or in conducting peacekeeping operations.

In order to improve all the main combat, technical and operational characteristics, the following was installed on it:

• Engine-transmission compartment with 5TDFM engine

• Improved undercarriage

• Automated steering system with a steering wheel

• Additional passive protection, built-in explosive reactive armor, optical-electronic countermeasures, new fire-fighting equipment

• Modern fire control system with duplicated control from the commander's seat

• Automatic loader

• Anti-aircraft gun of a closed type

• The new cannon, at the request of the customer, can be of a caliber of 125 mm or 120 mm.

KMDB together with Desarrollos Industriales Casanave S. A. developed a project for the modernization of the Peruvian T-55 tank, called the T-55M8A2 Typhoon. This modernization allows the T-55 tank to be brought closer to modern tanks in terms of its main characteristics.

Modernization of the BTR-50 armored personnel carrier

The purpose of modernization is to improve the characteristics of firepower and mobility. During the modernization of weapons, one of two variants of the combat module is installed, consisting of:

• 30 mm automatic cannon

• 7, 62 mm machine gun

• anti-tank missile system (ATGM) and automatic grenade launcher.

During the modernization of the power plant, the power plant with a Russian-made V-6 engine is being replaced with a power plant with a Ukrainian-made UTD-20 engine.

During the modernization of the power train (carried out in conjunction with the modernization of the power plant), a planetary gearbox with a GOP is installed instead of the one installed with the V-6 engines. As a result of modernization, the following is achieved:

• increasing firepower and expanding tactical capabilities;

• reduction of fuel consumption;

• increase in power density.

Modernization of armored personnel carriers BTR-70 and BTR-80

The power plant and armament of the BTR-70 vehicle have been modernized.

Instead of Russian-made ZMZ-4905 carburetor engines, a Ukrainian-made UTD-20 diesel engine was installed. Instead of a KPVT machine gun of 14.5 mm caliber, a KBA-2 cannon of 30 mm caliber was installed.

Installation of the UTD-20 four-stroke six-cylinder V-shaped diesel engine made it possible to improve the mobility characteristics and to modernize the power department of the BTR-70 fleet of vehicles in service with Ukraine, by the forces of Ukrainian enterprises.

Comprehensive tests carried out at the KMDB test site confirmed the effectiveness of the mobility characteristics of an armored personnel carrier with a UTD-20 diesel engine, while all other characteristics of the BTR-70 remained unchanged. The range is increased by 25% with the same fuel volumes due to a significant reduction in fuel consumption.

The cross-country ability of the machine in difficult road conditions is increased by increasing the engine torque.

KMDB named after A. A. Morozov developed and tested on the machine an effective cooling system that allows the machine to be operated at high temperatures (up to + 55 ° C) without restrictions.

The installation of a 30 mm KBA-2 cannon allows to increase the range and effectiveness of firing.
