Against the backdrop of a new exacerbation of the ongoing conflict between Palestine and Israel, there are reports of new weapons of the Israelis, which are designed to protect the locations of military units and the country's cities from rocket attacks from the Arabs. This weapon is called the "Iron Dome". The idea of the Israeli designers is simple: the new system works to intercept unguided shells and enemy missiles at a range of 4,000 to 70,000 meters. The Iron Dome can be called a tactical missile defense system. Today the Iron Dome operates to intercept Palestinian Qassams and multiple launch rocket systems such as the Grad.
In principle, this weapon would not have aroused interest in the media if it were not for the talk about the acquisition of the Iron Dome by American troops. A special consortium has already been created to promote the tactical missile defense system to the United States market. The question is, why did the Stars and Stripes guys need the Iron Dome, if they have their own counterpart, which is called the C-RAM. Pentagon officials say that the Israeli model has very impressive tactical and technical characteristics.
If we consider the "Iron Dome" precisely from the point of view of its protective characteristics, then it stands out, first of all, for its narrow specialization. The same "C-RAM" is much more versatile. The versatility lies in the fact that the "C-RAM" allows not only to defend against cruise missiles, but also reliably withstand grenade attacks and ballistic missiles. As you can see, "C-RAM" still has one flaw. It just lies in the possible vulnerability to missiles, the movement of which is not controlled by anyone. It is worth noting that one “Iron Dome” battery allows you to “cover” an area of 150 sq. Km. The complex can even cancel the interception if its radars determine the place of the missile crash away from buildings and military locations.
It turns out that by purchasing the "Iron Dome" from the Israelis, the Americans are closing this gap and getting a multi-level defense system. This defense system can serve as an ideal shield for advancing motorized rifle units and other military groups. If you imagine a battle against the American army equipped with an "Iron Dome" and "C-RAM", then the options for hitting any target with an enemy missile or projectile are completely ruled out. In this case, indeed, the offensive process can take place, as it were, under a dome, which provides ultra-reliable protection of army units. Why are we talking about an offensive? Yes, because the Americans do not have such a problem as the Israelis associated with the shelling of their cities. But the Americans can use this interesting defense weapon during an attack on enemy locations in the course of any war unleashed by them.
By the way, there was information that Georgia is also showing interest in the Iron Dome. Apparently, Mikheil Saakashvili also wants to see the action of the Iron Dome in the field. Did he really intend to test the strength of the Russian units and the patience of the world community again? Time will show.
