Within the family of armored vehicles "Typhoon", several projects of protected vehicles are being created. To date, two samples of such machines have reached trial operation in the army. These are the Typhoon-K and Typhoon-U armored cars, developed by the KamAZ and Ural automobile plants, respectively. Several dozen armored vehicles of two types are now being tested in the units of the Southern Military District. Not so long ago, one of the armored cars of the Kama Automobile Plant had to become an exhibit at the exhibition "Day of Innovations of the Southern Military District".

The development of the KamAZ-63968 Typhoon-K armored car project started at the beginning of this decade and was carried out as part of the program for the creation of promising protected vehicles for the armed forces. The first samples of the Typhoon family cars were built in 2011. Later, this technique was shown to the general public. The "premiere" of an armored car from the KamAZ company took place at the 2014 Victory Parade. Subsequently, these machines were repeatedly demonstrated in the course of other events, including the “Day of Innovations of the Southern Military District”.

In addition to the prime contractors, the Typhoon program involved several dozen other companies and organizations of the defense industry. Their task was to develop and manufacture various components and assemblies, armor, etc. Thus, all machines of the new family, including the Typhoon-K, are an excellent example of cooperation in the framework of promising projects.

Protection of the crew, troops and vehicle assemblies is provided with the help of combined armor, consisting of metal and ceramic elements. Such blocks protect the armored car from both small arms and mines under the wheel or bottom. Declared protection against small arms of various types of caliber up to 14, 5 mm. Mine protection - up to 8 kg of TNT.

In view of the solid booking, the KamAZ-63968 armored car has a gross weight of 24,730 kg. At the same time, the car transports up to 2.6 tons of cargo, and is also capable of towing a trailer weighing up to 8 tons. The main task of a promising armored car is the transportation of personnel. However, it is possible to transport some goods. In addition, within the framework of the Typhoon family, a special transport vehicle for the transport of goods can be created.

The required mobility characteristics are provided by a KamAZ-730.345-450 diesel engine with a power of 450 hp. The engine is paired with a transmission that provides four-wheel drive. Engine torque is transmitted to all six drive wheels. As part of the transmission, some imported units are used. The available power plant allows the armored car to accelerate on the highway to 100 km / h. The power reserve is up to 1000 km.

The Typhoon-K armored vehicle has a separate cockpit and a troop compartment module. The crew and troopers are separated from each other, but can communicate using existing devices. The cockpit provides three seats for the driver and other crew members. For monitoring the situation, they have a large windshield and two side windows in the doors. In addition, the crew and troops can use a set of video cameras installed around the perimeter of the vehicle. This equipment, the signal of which is displayed on the screens, greatly improves the visibility.

In the troop compartment there are 14 "mine" seats that reduce the impact of the shock wave on the passengers. Also, the safety of the landing is ensured by special five-point belts. In the sides of the troop compartment there are several small windows with bulletproof glass. For embarkation and disembarkation in the stern leaf there is a lowering ramp with hydraulic drives. If necessary, the fighters can leave the car through the door in the ramp. There are six hatches in the roof of the troop compartment module.

By now, armored cars of the Typhoon family, including KamAZ-63968 vehicles, have passed the main tests and transferred to the troops for trial operation. In December last year, it was reported that the units of the Southern Military District received 30 armored cars of a new type. In addition, at the very beginning of 2015, another two dozen armored vehicles were delivered. Based on the results of operation in the troops, a decision will be made on the adoption of this equipment for service.

One of the machines undergoing trial operation was sent to the exhibition "Innovation Day of the Southern Military District", where everyone could get acquainted with it. It should be noted that in March this year, during the campaign of the Ministry of Defense "Military service under a contract is your choice!" In early October, the doors and hatches of the armored car were open to everyone. We took advantage of this "offer" and present a photo review of the car.

Imported components are actively used in the design of the undercarriage. For example, the logo of the Irish company Timoney is visible on the wheel hub.

If the wheels do not cope with their work, a winch will help them.
