At the end of 2014, the armed forces received the first batch of Typhoon armored vehicles. Soon, several dozen more similar armored vehicles were handed over to the troops, which are to undergo trial operation. According to some reports, at present, the units of the Southern Military District are currently operating three dozen Typhoon-U armored cars manufactured by the Ural plant. Not so long ago, one of these machines arrived in Rostov-on-Don to participate in the exhibition "Innovation Day of the Southern Military District".
More than a hundred enterprises of the defense and automotive industries, as well as various research organizations, were involved in the Typhoon project, which was launched several years ago. The parent enterprise of the Typhoon-U project was the Ural automobile plant in Miass, which was marked by the corresponding letter in its name. The first detailed information about the Typhoon-U project appeared back in 2011, but until a certain time the car of the new type was in no hurry to show the general public. For example, the first demonstration of this technique at the Victory Parade took place only in 2015, while the Typhoon-K vehicles of the KamAZ plant entered Red Square a year earlier.
Like other equipment of the family, the Ural-63095 Typhoon-U armored cars are designed to transport personnel and some cargo in high-risk areas. According to the terms of reference, the new armored vehicles received a set of protective equipment against small arms bullets and explosive devices. Thus, the design of the vehicle protects the crew and troops from ambushes and other attacks.
A relatively large armored car "Typhoon-U" can have a mass of up to 22, 5 tons. In this case, up to 4 tons fall on the payload - landing or cargo. It is also possible to tow a trailer weighing up to 8 tons. With such weight characteristics, the machine must be equipped with an appropriate power plant. A diesel engine YaMZ-5367 with a capacity of 450 hp is installed under the armored hood. The MZKT-4361-40 gearbox and other transmission units are connected to the engine, ensuring the transmission of torque to all six driving wheels.
The possibility of driving on the highway at a speed of up to 100 km / h is declared. The armored car has two fuel tanks of 210 liters each, which can cover up to 1000 km without refueling. Independent pneumohydraulic suspension provides the ability to drive off-road and overcome various obstacles. Water obstacles are crossed ford. The suspension design allows you to change the ground clearance of the machine, adapting it to the existing conditions.
The armored car is equipped with a protected cockpit and a separate module for the deployment of troops. Protection of the crew, troops and units is provided by spaced armor, in the design of which metal sheets and ceramic plates are used. Thanks to this, the Typhoon-U can withstand hits from 14.5 mm bullets, and is also able to protect people from detonating a TNT charge weighing up to 8 kg.
The habitable volumes of the hull are divided into two parts. The first is the driver's cab. It has three seats for the driver and accompanying persons. The cab is equipped with communication systems and other necessary equipment. The troop transport module is designed as a separate unit mounted on a chassis. It was previously mentioned that the landing module can accommodate up to 16 seats for soldiers. The exhibition model of the machine received only 14 places for the landing.
To get inside the armored module, the landing force must use a descending ramp. In the event of a breakdown of the lifting units, it provides for a door that opens sideways. The crew and troops can observe the environment through a large windshield, cabin door windows, as well as through small glass in the sides of the armored module and in its ramp. All glasses, with the exception of the frontal glass, are equipped with loopholes for firing from personal weapons.
There are two hatches in the roof of the module, which can be used to install weapons, including remotely controlled combat modules. The need for such equipment and its type are determined by the customer in accordance with his needs.
According to open data, at least 30 Ural-63095 Typhoon-U armored vehicles have been built to date. Since the end of last year, armored vehicles of the Typhoon family have been undergoing trial operation in units of the Southern Military District. On October 5 and 6, one of the Miass-made machines was in Rostov-on-Don, where it took part in the exhibition “The Day of Innovations of the Southern Military District”. We present a photo review of this armored car.
