The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation has finally realized that, given the current realities, it is simply impossible to recruit 750 thousand conscripts every year, and that it is time to return to the increase in the number of servicemen serving under contract. This is exactly what the representatives of the country's Defense Ministry spoke about last Friday at a meeting with President Medvedev, who, thank God, supported the idea of increasing contract soldiers and promised to allocate the necessary funds for this.
Anatoly Serdyukov said that now the Russian Army will have 220 thousand officer posts and 425 thousand contract soldiers. If we consider that the number of our army at the moment is slightly more than one million people, this means that only 355 thousand conscripts will be required per year, and this is a much more realistic figure and there is certainly no need to be afraid of shortages.
The decision is quite sensible, since in the next ten years, there will be no more than 650-700 thousand 18-year-old boys annually. If we take into account that more than half of them will receive a reprieve for one reason or another, and there are even fewer older conscripts, it becomes clear that the grandiose plans of the Main Organizational and Mobilization Directorate (GOMU) to recruit 750 thousand conscripts a year, initially were doomed to fail. So it was only a matter of time to return to the increase in contract servicemen.
Apparently, the final decision to increase the number of servicemen serving on a contract basis was made by the Ministry of Defense following the results of the autumn conscription campaign. Despite the fact that, according to official data, it went according to plans, in reality everything looked somewhat different. Even if the military registration and enlistment offices managed to recruit the required number of conscripts, it should be noted with what heroic labor this was done.
At the same time, due to the lack of the required number of officers and the lack of professional sergeants, hazing has noticeably increased in military units in recent years. Which, in principle, is not surprising, the conscripts were essentially left to their own devices and control over them was clearly not enough.
So, this is the second (the first on the allocation of 20 trillion rubles for the rearmament of the army until 2020) optimistic news that has come from the camp of the Ministry of Defense recently. But I just have some doubts about whether the same officials who failed the previous reform of transferring the army to a contract basis will be able to competently carry out the current one. Indeed, in a short time, it is necessary to recruit 275 thousand contract soldiers, and even if the monetary allowance of a private now will not be 12-15 thousand rubles, as before, but will more than double, these doubts still remain.
