Undoubtedly, one of the most weighty arguments in favor of the rabid booking of automobile equipment was the unsatisfactory state of the Ukrainian army's armored vehicles fleet and the monstrous losses on the battlefields. So, according to Yuri Biryukov, a representative of the presidential administration of Ukraine, in November 2014, the army lost up to 70% of all armored vehicles. Even without taking into account such panicky statements, clearly calculated on the help of Western partners, the share of destroyed equipment does not seem scanty. Coupled with the massive use of cannon and mortar artillery, as well as the constant danger of being ambushed, the "shushpanzerization" of automotive technology looks quite relevant.

The question is the effectiveness of such a booking. Most of the technology is reinforced with conventional sheet steel, which has not even gone through the hardening procedure. Along with some absurdity of the designs of Ukrainian homemade products, there is an armored action of bullets and shrapnel. Penetrating through an impromptu steel protection, the bullet often breaks down into many fragments, creates a fragmentation field from the fragments of the skin, and also changes direction of movement and begins to somersault in flight. All this can increase the lethal effect of the ammunition in manpower. However, it can be assumed that bullets at the end, as well as small fragments of artillery shells, cannot penetrate the obstacle. The protection against the high-explosive action of shells is quite controversial, since the hulls of the shushpanzers are not airtight - the shock wave flows freely into the gaping slots of the hull. A common feature of all homemade products is the complete lack of protection against mines and improvised explosive devices. Neither the change in the shape of the bottom, nor the installation of the simplest explosion-proof seats are envisaged.

Most of the homemade armored vehicles are of course used by numerous volunteer battalions and the National Guard. The Ukrainian Armed Forces will use them in part. Although the Ukrainian army met with hostilities in the southeast of the country in a paradoxical situation - there are a lot of armored vehicles in warehouses (more than 4 thousand armored personnel carriers, BMD, BMP and BRDM are in storage alone), but most are not even equipped with engines. Photo evidence of numerous "shushpanzerov" used on the side of the government of Ukraine (and not only), literally filled the Internet space.

Armored KAMAZ of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Noteworthy is the relatively competent booking with the protection of the driver and passengers.

The product of deep "armored tuning" is a light armored car "Scorpion" on the chassis of a UAZ-469B vehicle from the Ukrainian 11th territorial defense battalion "Kievan Rus". Stages of construction and "presentation". The rudiments of an anti-mine design are visible, although, perhaps, they simply saved the metal. The machine is equipped with DShK and the corresponding APU markings.

The battalion of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine "Dnepr-1" for some time possessed a miracle KAMAZ, as if it had come off the screen of "Mad Max", but lost the car near Ilovaisk. Probably the first trophy "shushpanzer" in Ukraine. The inner skeleton of the armored hood is clearly visible, as well as the armor made of welded steel rods or reinforcement. Obviously, the "engineering and design staff" had to go to such tricks in the absence of steel sheets of the required thickness. In addition, such a translucent armor allows the driver to somehow orientate himself on the road.

Another "damaged" KAMAZ armor, inherited by the soldiers of Novorossiya. The car obviously came under fire. It is interesting that somehow they did not think about the protection of the driver …

The Azov battalion used such an armored KAMAZ. In general, the products of the plant from Naberezhnye Chelny are enjoying success among artisanal armored vehicles. Obviously, the whole point is in the hoodless layout, which simplifies welding of the hood. Products of Ukrainian KrAZ trucks, as you know, are mainly bonneted.

A deeply armored KAMAZ equipped with bulletproof glass in one of the variants! This is almost the only example of installing such a cab protection. But the photo does not show whether the windshield is armored on one of the variants of the car, but the mesh-netting, which is entangled in the cabin, rather bears psychological protection. Even if it causes a premature detonation of an anti-tank grenade or VOG, the damage will still be fatal.

A pickup truck, obviously based on a Dodge Ram of the mid-90s, which was armored in frontal projection and sent to fight in the Shakhtar battalion, opens the line of foreign vehicles. The life-affirming inscription on board - "He who is not with us is against us."

Just a chpoker. Hammer base with interesting corner armor on the windshield. The idea is neat - to increase the chances of bullet ricochet and the thickness of the steel plate, and to give the driver an overview. Similar booking techniques have been seen on armored vehicles in Syria. Obviously, the car worked as a convoy for the OSCE.

Another "foreigner" Nissan Patrol of the intelligence of the 25th separate airmobile brigade of Ukraine. The machine is overloaded, as can be seen from the sagging rear suspension and tires. Armed with a Nissan automatic grenade launcher.

An unfinished exhibit based on the Ford Bronco. It is clearly seen that the car is being armored with metal from the nearest store. Whether the design work was completed is unknown.

Perhaps one of the most advanced self-made armored cars in Ukraine - "Hardhead" on the all-wheel drive chassis of the KAMAZ-4310 series. However, even in this version, the roof is not reserved (obviously, to reduce weight), and the welders could not refuse to install anti-cumulative grilles on the face.

A completely wild-looking KAMAZ, which, however, allows you to tilt the cab under fire and repair the engine.

Striking examples of factory modifications. ZIL-131 with corner armor, created at one of the repair enterprises in Ukraine. The hinged structure is welded neatly and painstakingly painted. The plant workers took care of the serious booking of the cab and the protection of the gas tank.
