AU A-220M is a modernization of the universal AU A-220. In 67, work began on the design of the universal AU A-220 of 1x57-mm caliber. By 68, the Central Research Institute "Burevestnik" completed work on the draft design. In 1975-77, the prototype of the installation was tested at the proving ground. The tests were found unsatisfactory, and the sample was sent for revision. 1977-78, the AU A-220 and the Vympel-220 control system are undergoing state tests. A boat of project 206PE was used for testing. State tests are recognized as successful, but the universal installation does not enter service. In 2000-01, the Central Research Institute "Burevestnik" is developing the modernization of the AU A-220. The upgraded unit is named A-220M. The main purpose is to install the A-220M ship version on ships with a displacement of more than 250 tons.

Universal AU A-220

The installation was intended to arm ships with a displacement of more than 250 tons. AU was used in conjunction with the Vympel-220 control system and the MR-123 radar. They provided guidance and tracking of the installation to surface, ground and air targets at a distance of up to 5 kilometers. The PUS was equipped with a tivi visor. There was a reserve PUS - a sighting column with a collimator sight. In the installation itself, aluminum alloys were used to reduce weight. The bore had combined cuts. The installation was provided with continuous water cooling. For the supply of ammunition, a linkless screw feed was used.

The main characteristics of the A-220:

- 400 rounds of ammunition;

- tivi-visor range - 75 kilometers surface target, 7 kilometers air field;

- height 3.2 meters;

- weight 6 tons;

- vertical guidance -5 + 80 0С;

- horizontal guidance ± 180 0С;

- barrel length 75 calibers;

- rollback 300 mm;

- projectile weight 6.5 kilograms;

- the initial velocity of the projectile is 1 km / s;

- ballistic range up to 9 kilometers;

- range of the self-liquidator up to 6 kilometers;

- average rate of fire of 300 rounds per minute;

- one burst of 50 shots;

- a break of 20-30 seconds;

- combat reaction time 10-12 seconds;

The experimental AU A-220 was installed on the surface ship No. 110 of the project 206PE, which remained in the Navy.

Upgraded shipborne AU A-220M

The main purpose is to be installed on ships with a displacement of more than 250 tons. At the request of the Central Research Institute "Burevestnik" is ready to modify the installation for any modern ship. The high-speed installation is versatile - it strikes sea, land and air targets. Works at temperatures of -40 + 50 0С.

- installation weight 6,000 kilograms;

Upgraded artillery mount with a BM-57 57 mm cannon

The main purpose is installation on military equipment. Installation is possible in order to modernize equipment and as the main caliber of new military equipment. AU-220M was developed on the basis of the S-60 anti-aircraft gun. The developers of the AU-220M are already proposing to install this installation on the PT-76 amphibious tank as the main weapon for modernization. Although in the Russian Federation these tanks have been removed from service, a sufficient number of PT-76s are used by foreign states in service.
