The company "A + A" from Tula began serial production and supplies to stores of an aerosol self-defense device under the sonorous name "Dobrynya", which is used with small-sized cans BAM-OS 18x51 mm. The company "A + A" LLC has been operating in the Russian arms market since 2004. At present, its activities are based on its own, fundamentally new developments in the field of barrelless self-defense weapons and pneumatic weapons, as well as cartridges for them. All products manufactured by the enterprise are certified in Russia and protected by patents for inventions and utility models.
Among the rather extensive arsenal of self-defense means that are available today on the Russian market, pyro-liquid devices are becoming increasingly popular among the population, which are designed for dosed spraying of non-lethal toxic substances in the air. By design, this is something between a conventional gas cartridge and a gas pistol. Barrelless weapons look more like a pistol grip and can be equipped with special ammunition-cartridges - small aerosol cans, abbreviated as BAM. The principle of operation of such a weapon is based on throwing liquid, hence its name, as well as the main difference from gas pistols. And the ability to make an aimed shot provides an accurate hit in the face of the attacker.
When fired, such a device throws a jet of irritant into the attacker's face, like an ordinary gas canister, but you can shoot from it even in small rooms (an elevator, a car), as well as in bad rainy or windy weather without the formation of a gas cloud, which could cause harm to the defender himself. Getting on the mucous membrane of the eyes, pharynx and nasal cavity, the irritant has a very strong effect, causing burning sensation, nasal discharge, lacrimation and salivation. As a result, the attacker loses the ability to perform active actions for 10-15 minutes, while the irritant does not cause any irreversible harm to his health. Also, the purchase of such a weapon does not require a permit to acquire it. And the small size and weight make aerosol self-defense devices very comfortable to carry, including hidden ones.
The first-born among such devices on the domestic market was the UDAR model (Metered Aerosol Spraying Device), which was developed on the basis of special complexes PSG "Jasmine" and "Violet" (special liquid pistols), used since the early 1980s in the KGB of the USSR as non-lethal weapons. This weapon was intended to help in the detention of persons in crowded places, shooting from military weapons in which it was impossible. Standard BAM differed from special ones by a lower concentration of an irritant in the projectile, a slightly larger diameter of the nozzle hole and the absence of a powder sample. Later, other models of aerosol devices that also use BAMs appeared on the Russian market. Among them were "Bamer" from the AKBS company from Nizhny Novgorod, as well as "Charodey", "Premier" and "Premier-4" from the "A + A" company from Tula.
In 2016, this family of samples of self-defense weapons was replenished with another model, which was named "Dobrynya", most likely in honor of the famous ancient Russian epic hero Dobrynya Nikitich, who, in addition to his strength, became famous for his dexterity, intelligence and ability to shoot accurately from a bow. In March 2016, the Tula company "A + A" started serial production of the novelty and began to carry out wholesale deliveries of "Dobrynya" for specialized trade enterprises.
Outwardly, the Dobrynya aerosol device differs markedly for the better from most of its counterparts, standing out in a more aesthetic appearance and design, some even manage to find in it a certain resemblance to the PSS Vul (6P28) silent pistol, which is in service with various special services of the Russian Federation and other countries. Naturally, design in self-defense weapons is of secondary importance, but some similarity to military weapons can bring its own advantages, for example, an additional psychological effect that will act on the person who is attacking you. The commercial attractiveness of such a novelty should not be disregarded: a spectacular military-style appearance is far from the last argument that influences the buyer, prompting him to opt for this particular product and not another product in this segment. A well-thought-out concept, coupled with an attractive design and an adequate price, can make the Dobrynya aerosol self-defense device a bestseller on the Russian market.
It should be noted that "Dobrynya" is very light (only 175 g when unloaded) and a very compact device with small dimensions. Thanks to this, self-defense weapons can easily fit in a pocket of clothes, in a handbag, purse, belt bag or in a case for a camera, that is, it is ideal for constant hidden carrying. At the same time, Dobrynya can also be worn in a branded holster specially created for it. The body of the aerosol device is made of heavy-duty injection molded plastic, and all loaded structural parts are made of metal. Powerful springs, well-thought-out striker design and very good ergonomics make this weapon reliable.
This model of non-lethal weapon is loaded from above with five BAMs, they are inserted into the built-in magazine located in the handle. After firing, the cartridge case is ejected automatically, while they can be removed without firing from the device, simply by pressing a special key located in the breech. Standard cans for the device are BAM-OS.000 18x51 mm cans, which are also produced in Tula at the A + A enterprise. Each such BAM is loaded with 4 cubic centimeters of a substance called oleoresin capsicum (red pepper extract). When fired at a distance of 5 meters, a similar BAM forms a spot measuring 300 by 400 mm.
Using the special adapters supplied with the device, Dobrynya can be taught to shoot with BAMs of a smaller caliber 13x50 mm. Of course, they will have less power, but they are also somewhat cheaper, in addition, they can also be used to train in shooting from weapons, since only in this caliber training BAMs are produced, which are equipped with ordinary water. The bicaliberness of the device also allows the use of BAMs with different irritants and noisy ones.
The Dobrynya device uses a striker-type firing mechanism that operates in a self-cocking mode. The trigger pull is approximately 70 N. When the shooter presses the trigger, not only the Zhevelo-type capsule breaks, but also the next BAM feed upward, as well as the automatic ejection of the spent cartridge case. There is no fuse on the Dobryna, so non-lethal weapons are always ready for use. The recommended retail price of the aerosol device on the Russian market is about 3 thousand rubles, or about 40 euros.
