The 2S14 self-propelled gun was intended to counter a tank unit in direct combat. The chassis used from the BTR-70 combat vehicle allowed the self-propelled guns to constantly maneuver on the battlefield and conduct aimed fire at enemy armored vehicles. It was planned to use the self-propelled guns in the airborne units.
The history of the development of ACS 2S14
In the seventies, the military leadership of the Soviet Union issues an order to the Klimovsk Central Research Institute of Precision Engineering for the development of a project of a stationary and self-propelled anti-tank gun. At that time, the main anti-tank gun was the 100 mm MT-12 artillery cannon, stationary. In the developed prototype ACS 2S14, a 2A62 85 mm cannon was used. The gun was supposed to have increased ballistic data, the gun ammunition did not have standard interchangeability with the rest of domestic equipment.
In parallel, OKB-9 was developing an anti-tank gun "2A45" Sprut-B stationary use. The gun turned out to be very large and was very inconvenient to use, especially for fast airborne operations. A self-propelled gun could help solve this problem - being a light and fast technique, it had the ability to quickly maneuver in combat.
The anti-tank gun could fire up to 25 rounds per minute, the main ammunition was a feathered armor-piercing projectile. The gun used a new muzzle brake at that time with efficiency rates up to 80%. Due to the fact that the self-propelled guns were developed as a light military equipment, during the production of a shot, the car significantly "threw up".
The beginning of the end of the project came after the "Sprut-B" showed the highest armor-piercing characteristics, the backlog of the 85-mm self-propelled guns "Sting-S" was more than 50%. This was unacceptable - the Sting-S self-propelled guns could not compete on equal terms with the tanks of a potential enemy of the Challenger type.
By 1980, the project was closed. The last of the prototypes of the self-propelled guns "Sting-S" is on display in the museum of armored vehicles in the city of Kubinka.
The main characteristics of ACS "Sting-S":
