Object 416 is one of the attempts of Russian designers to create a tank with a minimal silhouette. During the design process, it turned out that the mechanisms used do not yet allow the construction of a tank with a minimum silhouette. Therefore, during the implementation of the project, the requirements for the vehicle were reduced, and the development was retrained into an anti-tank ACS. The main purpose of the developed ACS is to counteract highly armored vehicles and fortified structures of the enemy.
Object creation 416
52 years old. The design of the anti-tank ACS is carried out by the design department of plant No. 75 in Kharkov. The project is headed by F. Mostovoy. A prototype of an anti-tank self-propelled gun with an M63 gun, built and ready for field trials. M63 was created by the design bureau of plant # 72 in Perm on the basis of the D-10 tank gun. The gun had a barrel length of 5.5 meters and was equipped with a wedge-type breechblock. In addition, to improve the stability characteristics during the production of direct fire, the gun was equipped with an improved muzzle brake.
Device and design Object 416
Anti-tank self-propelled guns "Object 416" can be classified as a closed self-propelled gun with a circular turret. The layout of the object is made as an ACS, with a bow MTO and a rear arrangement of the fighting compartment. The peculiarity of this anti-tank self-propelled gun is that the entire team of the vehicle, four people, were in the turret. This allowed the designers to design the car with a fairly low height, about 1.8 meters, but this created inconvenience for the loading crew member, who, sitting or even on his knees, loaded the gun. The driver-mechanic, when turning the tower, remained constantly directly in the direction of the car. This was achieved with special devices. This kind of driving required a lot of driving experience. The M63 gun of 100 mm caliber was paired with the Goryunov SGMT tank machine gun of 7.62 mm caliber. The gun was provided with a mechanism for easier loading and a system for purging the barrel with air after firing a shot. The vertical angles of the gun pointing from 36 to -5 degrees. Without turning the turret, the gun's own horizontal pointing angles are 10 degrees in both directions. The tests carried out showed the characteristics of the rate of fire up to 10 rds / min. M63 ammunition was equal to 35 ammunition. The gun provided the projectile with an initial velocity, while firing a shot - 0.9 km / s. The engine, an anti-tank self-propelled gun, received a diesel version with 12 cylinders and four strokes. DG power - 400 h.p. The cylinders were located in the engine in a horizontal position. The diesel engine was provided with an ejection-type cooling system. The engine was located in the front of the chassis of the anti-tank ACS and was installed across the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. Transmission - mechanical type, consisted of:
- the main clutch;
- 5 speed gearbox;
- 2-stage PMP;
- single row final drives.
Another feature of the "Object 416" - hydraulic drives, with the help of which, from the rotating tower, the machine was controlled. The gears were switched preselector - switching on the desired gear using the wings, was carried out by pressing the pedal. The drive was provided by two hydrostatic devices, which ensured turning of the turret floor and a separate driver's seat. The undercarriage had a torsion bar suspension, road wheels covered with rubber, tracks with OMSh.
Tests and the fate of ACS
52 years old. The finished sample of the anti-tank self-propelled gun is being successfully tested at the test site. However, the state admissions committee comes to the conclusion, based on the tests carried out - the "Object 416" showed a maximum firing range less than that of the SU-100P, despite the fact that their firepower turned out to be equal, that the adoption and launch into mass production of the "Object 416 "is impractical.
In total, one single sample of the "Object 416" was made, which was tested, the anti-tank self-propelled gun was never adopted for service. At the moment "Object 416" is in the museum of armored vehicles in Kubinka.
