The priorities of Russian military development today are the construction of structures that meet modern technologies, which would fit within the specified time frame, and would not require extra costs. Military construction today is engaged in engineering troops, which, as it happened, are often referred to as "construction battalion".

Modern engineering troops include several directions. These are pontoon, road, engineering and sapper and other areas that are engaged in their own activities for the construction of various objects. Such objects include temporary crossings, structures for practicing the actions of other types of troops, training grounds, and much more.

Some time ago, the engineering troops (mainly in the USSR) took an active part in the construction of housing for military personnel. Until now, in different cities of the country, there were military camps that were built by soldiers of construction battalions, who gathered literally from all the republics of the Union. Usually, such townships consist of the so-called Brezhnev five-story buildings, which were assembled like a designer from individual panels produced at factories of reinforced concrete products. If today the territory of military camps can be fenced with fences made of corrugated board, which are quite easy to erect, then earlier the main material for creating a fence was concrete. Concrete slabs can still be seen today as a kind of hedge for military facilities for various purposes. To increase the security of the object, such plates are equipped from above with additional sections in which barbed wire can be pulled.

Engineering troops are by no means an invention of our time. Any of the ancient armies had their own units that performed the tasks of guiding crossings over water obstacles, building siege towers and other actions related to military construction. The only difference could be that these actions were performed by the same soldiers who were supposed to participate in the further battle, that is, the unit of soldiers-builders could not be separated from the army on a permanent basis. In the Roman army, at a certain stage of its existence, construction work for military purposes was carried out by slaves. They were engaged in the construction of defensive ramparts on the borders of the empire so that the troops of Rome had an advantage over the enemy trying to penetrate their territory.
