Russia's position on the world armored vehicle market looks very contradictory. Such confidence was expressed by the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, and Deputy Director of the Center Konstantin Makienko said this in an interview for RIA Novosti. The country, according to him, began to slowly lose ground due to the fact that it is not yet capable of producing modern competitive products.
The contradiction is that in 2000-2009 the Russian Federation was actually the largest supplier of the world market for armored vehicles. At the same time, the growth in sales of T-90S battle tanks was provided mainly by India and Algeria. But outside of them there are no breakthroughs of the Russian car. In the world market, the Chinese-made VT1A tank has recently begun to gain popularity.
Konstantin Makienko believes that the stagnation of the technical level of the T-90 battle tanks with an increase in its price became an objective reason for the defeat in the Moroccan tender for the supply of battle tanks: the Chinese VT1A bypassed our car. Chinese tanks offered for export are cheaper. Now China has brought Type 96 tanks to the market, and in the future, Type 99 is expected. This country has good chances to meet the needs of customers in a variety of both price and technical segments.
The loss of the T-90S in the Malaysian tank tender is another alarming signal, according to Konstantin Makienko. Here the Russian tank lost to the Polish PT-91M. By the way, this machine was created on the basis of the Soviet T-72. Obsolescence of technology, narrowness of offers, as well as a lack of flexibility in responding to market demands - all these are the reasons for the slow weakening of the position of the Russian Federation in the world market of armored vehicles. To overcome this trend, Russia must make a qualitative breakthrough.
The situation can be slightly improved by bringing existing tanks to conformity with world standards, the same model T-90AM, for example. This car was created by the Ural Design Bureau of Transport Engineering. The tank is equipped with surveillance devices, protection, a new automatic loader and a cannon.
Certain hopes were pinned on the "Object 195" (T-95) - a tank of a fundamentally new design. It had new surveillance systems, an active protection system, an isolated crew compartment, an information management system and new engines. However, the Russian Ministry of Defense stopped financing the project for the creation of Object 195 last year, considering the cost of the machine and its technical complexity too high.
In the next few years, the Russian Federation will still retain its high positions in the world market of armored vehicles. However, the decline in sales of Russian tanks will provoke new developments in the military equipment of competitors. Without a qualitative leap, according to Makienko, the preservation of Russia's leading position is impossible.
During 2006-2009, Russia sold 482 tanks to the foreign market. Total sales - $ 1.57 billion. Such calculations were carried out in September 2010. The volume of supplies to Russia ranked first. For comparison: Germany offered 292 tanks, while the USA offered 209 vehicles. The World Arms Trade Analysis Center estimates that the volume of deliveries of our tanks to the world market in 2010-2013 will amount to 859 units. The assessment is based on already concluded agreements and voiced intentions of some states.
