Hero of Russia

Dates of decrees: 19.09.2008, Medal No. 925

Mylnikov Sergey Andreevich - tank commander of the 141st separate tank battalion of the 19th Voronezh-Shumlinskaya Red Banner Orders of Suvorov and the Red Banner of Labor of the motorized rifle division of the 58th Army of the North Caucasian Military District, sergeant.

Born on February 8, 1986 in the city of Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg), Sverdlovsk region. Russian. From a family of workers. In 2003 he graduated from secondary school No. 44 in Yekaterinburg. He studied at one of the colleges in Yekaterinburg as a programmer.

In October 2006, he was drafted by the Chkalovsky district military enlistment office of Yekaterinburg for military service in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. He served in a training tank unit in Yelan, then in the 19th motorized rifle division of the North Caucasus Military District in Vladikavkaz. In early 2008, he wrote a report on the conclusion of a contract for military service.

As part of a battalion tactical group under the command of his tank company commander, Captain Y. Yakovlev, on August 8, 2008, he entered South Ossetia to end the genocide of the Ossetian population. When approaching Tskhinval on August 9, the battalion tactical group, which included the tank commander Sergeant S. A. Mylnikov, was attacked by superior enemy forces. In the course of repelling the attack, Sergeant S. A. Mylnikov destroyed 3 armored vehicles (armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles).

Directly in a street battle in Tskhinvali, having the task of unblocking the encircled battalion of Russian peacekeepers of Lieutenant Colonel K. A. Timerman, the crew of the T-72 tank under the command of Sergeant S. A. Mylnikov destroyed 2 tanks and 3 units of light armored vehicles. By their actions, the tankers (4 tanks in total) ensured a breakthrough to the surrounded peacekeepers and saved them from destruction.

However, there was no end in sight to the brutal street fighting. Georgian artillery and tanks fiercely fired at the positions of the Russian peacekeepers. The tank of Sergeant S. A. Mylnikov acted as a nomadic fire weapon. Moving back and forth, he hit the enemy's manpower and equipment with well-aimed fire. The vehicle received four direct hits (two from the BMP cannon and two from the RPG). In the end, the crew left the damaged tank, which had already run out of ammunition. The ring around the peacekeepers' town was shrinking. The Georgians fired at our positions from a distance of 40 meters. The reinforcements going to help the peacekeepers were stopped by the enemy literally a few hundred meters away. Under these conditions, battalion commander K. A. Timerman decided to retreat to meet our troops. However, it was impossible to do this under fierce fire. The enemy attacked continuously. Then Sergeant S. A. Mylnikov returned to his damaged tank and at maximum speed sent an unarmed tank towards the advancing enemy. Panic arose in the ranks of the Georgians, more than 20 Georgians caught in the path of the tank fled, abandoning their combat positions. This allowed the Russian peacekeeping battalion in this very place to break through in an organized way to its own, carrying out the wounded and the dead.
