On Friday, the St. Petersburg shipbuilding enterprise Severnaya Verf launched the lead frigate of the Russian Navy, Admiral of the Fleet Sergei Gorshkov.
This is the first post-Soviet ship in the far sea zone. At the moment, the ship is 40% ready.
The frigate Admiral Gorshkov of Project 22350, developed by the Northern Design Bureau, was laid down at Severnaya Verf in February 2006. The ship is scheduled to be handed over to the fleet in 2011.
Ships of this type will be armed with cruise missiles capable of striking both the coastal zone and enemy ships. The frigate has no restrictions on the cruising range, RIA Novosti reports.
In the future, the frigates of this project will be included in the combat composition of all four fleets of Russia, and the need of the Russian fleet for ships of this class ranges from 20 to 30 units, representatives of the Navy noted earlier. They also added that the frigate of this project will become the main class of surface ships of the Russian Navy in the oceanic zone in the 21st century, since it has universal capabilities to perform tasks both in solo voyage and as part of groups.
