The improved XM2010 sniper rifle (formerly known as the M24E1) is a deep modernization of the M24 army sniper rifle commissioned by the American military by Remington Arms. The purpose of this modernization was to improve both the operational characteristics of the weapon and increase its combat data - primarily the maximum effective firing range. From the original M24 rifle, only the receiver of the Remington model 700 rifle, historically designed for the Magnum class cartridges, remained. Everything else - the stock, the barrel, the bolt group, the trigger mechanism - has been done anew. The manufacturer claims that the XM2010 sniper rifle will provide an effective range of the order of 1200-1300 meters and an accuracy of 1 MOA or less when using the Mk. 248 Mod.1 cartridges in service in the USA.300 Winchester Magnum. Currently (late 2010), the US Army's plans include converting at least 2,500 M24 rifles into the XM2010 variant for subsequent shipment to active forces in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The XM2010 sniper rifle uses manual reloading with a longitudinally sliding rotary bolt that has two lugs in the front of it. Cartridges are fed from detachable box magazines with a capacity of 5 rounds. The cantilever stock is made of aluminum alloy, the stock is fully adjustable, foldable for storage and transportation. The forend is aluminum, on its upper part there is an elongated Picatinny rail, starting above the receiver. The Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20x50mm ER / T M5 optical sight is mounted on this rail, in addition to which the AN / PVS-29 Clip-on Sniper Night Sight night sight can be used. The rifle is standardly equipped with a quick-detachable silencer for the sound of a shot produced by Advanced Armament Co, installed on the barrel over the standard flame arrester.
