An important feature of the conduct of hostilities in a local armed conflict is active confrontation in communications. To ensure the reliable and safe passage of convoys along the routes of movement, a complex and rather voluminous complex of organizational and technical measures is organized and applied. Such complexes include an increase in the individual protection of vehicles from fire damage to the enemy.
In the course of the first Chechen campaign, Ural-4320 vehicles appeared in the military units of the Russian Army, on which a local body armor system was installed. Despite some imperfection of the design used, their use in real combat conditions received a satisfactory assessment. The experience of the first mistakes was taken into account, and after a while, vehicles with improved protection appeared in the military units.
The new protection provided for the closure on three sides of the front of the car, which contains the full engine. The driver's cab is covered with armor plates, and bulletproof blocks are installed instead of ordinary glass. To protect the fuel tank and transmission units, as well as the car body, sheets with reinforced armor are used, which is able to reliably protect against direct hit of bullets, small-caliber projectiles and mine fragments.
For the possibility of conducting aimed fire from machine guns and other small arms in the side and stern sheets, the walls for the loopholes were cut, which in their design resemble the loopholes of the armored personnel carrier - 60PB. If necessary, shooting on mountain slopes and upper floors of buildings can be carried out over protected sides. The height of the walls of an armored box is equal to the height of an average person. The personnel inside the box are placed along the walls on built-in folding benches. In order to protect against bad weather conditions, armored vehicles are additionally equipped with awnings that cover the armored box from above.
Taking into account the enemy's ability to use powerful ammunition as landmines, namely 152-mm artillery shells, as well as 120-mm mines, which are installed on the side of the roadbed, the thickness of the armor in trucks is significantly increased. The additional weight of the hinged protection had a negative impact on the vehicle's speed and its maneuverability, but the level of safety of personnel and transported goods increased several times.
Armored vehicles are very rarely used to transport cargo of materiel, in most cases they are used to transport personnel to the place of performing tactical and guard combat missions, as well as to transport convoy guards. In such cases, direct interaction with combat vehicles is organized, which are armed with the ZU-23-2.
Armor isn't the only way to protect vehicles. So on some machines, specials are installed. electronic warfare equipment, which serves to reliably suppress the radio channels for controlling landmines.
Replaced by armor, vehicles have become reliable protection for the personnel of motorized rifle units in the most difficult situations of hostilities.
